We will be receiving bids in January for interior renovation work to the instructional areas at OES. Renovations include classroom reconfiguration, new furniture, and new hallway lockers to maximize instructional space and flexibility.
Work has begun for buildings at our NHS baseball field and football/track and field facility. Both locations will have improvements in storage spaces, concession stands, and restrooms. A new entrance to the football/track and field facility is part of this project, too.
In our continued efforts to build and improve our special education programs, Norwell has hired several new special education positions: Education Services Director, NHS Intense Interventions and Autism Specialist, NMS Intense Interventions, Elementary Intense Interventions, Deaf and Hard of Hearing Itinerant, Blind and Low Vision Itinerant, and Social Worker. We are excited about the improved experiences and opportunities for our students with special needs.
We have added 33 Dual Credit classes and 3 new CTE classes at Norwell High School. Assistant Superintendent Anna Murphy, NHS Principal Kam Meyer, and our NHS Guidance Team have done a tremendous job leading the efforts to bring these programming opportunities to our students and community.
For the 2023-24 school year, Norwell doubled our PreK staffing and enrollment numbers. Through the On My Way PreK Grant, we will continue to expand this programming and provide additional early childhood development support.
This past June, 29 NHS students traveled to Japan for a cultural immersion trip. Led by NHS science teachers, Jacob Bowman and Mark Weinert, the students spent 6 full days experiencing the Japanese culture. This past fall, NHS student, Maddie Tanner, was selected to be a 2024-25 Rotary Youth Exchange Student to study abroad. Maddie is sponsored by the Ossian Rotary Club. Norwell will continue to be supportive of these international experiences for our students.
In addition to the work highlighted above, we are working in several other areas to provide the best possible programming and opportunities for our students. These other efforts include improved alignment within our K-5 programming, expanded alternative education programming, and strengthening our ongoing relationships with faith-based community organizations. Along with our winter and spring break dates, listed below are dates for our upcoming strategic planning sessions. Whether you signed up for a participation group or not, you are always welcome to attend these sessions.
Finally, there is an opportunity for our community and business partners to support these efforts through donations to the Norwell Community Schools Fund that is facilitated by the Wells County Community Foundation. To donate, select the Donate Button at www.wellscountyfound.org and choose Norwell Community Schools Fund as the recipient.
